Senate body discusses ‘irregularities' in NHA contracts


ISLAMABAD - The Standing Committee on Communication on Thursday discussed alleged irregularities in some of National Highway Authority (NHA) contracts and decided to involve National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the matter.
The Senate Standing Committee meeting chaired by Awami National Party (ANP) central leader Zahid Khan, discussed the contract awarded for cutting work from 2008 to November 2012 on National Highway (N-35). The committee meeting was also attended by Senator Nisar Muhammad, Chairman National Highway Authority Javed Iqbal, Member Operation, Member Motorway and other.
Expressing reservation over awarding of contract to some of companies repeatedly, Zahid Khan demanded record from National Highway Authority. If the record was not provided than matter would be referred to the NAB, he maintained. On it, NHA official responded that if it necessary action would also be taken against the guilty.
The committee members also expressed reservation over tenders released by authority for the repair of roads in Abbotabad. The matter regarding escalation of cost in some of the projects was also discussed in length.
The next committee meeting would discuss the matter regarding diversion of PM's discretionary funds his hometown (Multan).
