Killing attempt to derail democracy: Zardari

LAHORE - The PPP leaders paid rich tributes to Punjabs assassinated Governor, Salmaan Taseer on the occasion of his Rasme Qul held at Governors House on Thursday. People from all walks of life including Federal and provincial ministers and a good number of PPP workers attended the ceremony. They recited Holy Quran and prayed for the departed soul and remembered late Taseer as a diehard party jiala who served the PPP with commitment. Party workers demanded stern punishment for those behind his killing. The participants also condoled Salmaan Taseers death with his sons. Federal Law Minister Dr Babar Awan, partys Punjab President, Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, General Secretary Punjab Samiullah, Senior Minister Raja Riaz, President PPP Lahore, Samina Khalid Ghurki, central party leader Ch Aitzaz Ahsan, Chairman ETPB Syed Asif Hashmi, Chairman SNGPL Mian Misbah ur Rehman, Secretary Finance Punjab Aurangzeb Burki. former General Secretary Punjab Ghulam Abbas, former MPA Dr Ziaullah Khan Bangash, , former Governor Punjab Shahid Hamid, MPA Sajida Mir, Shahida Jabeen and Haji Aziz ur Rehman Chan were prominent on the occasion among others. Punjab Minister for Agriculture Ahmad Ali Aulakh while representing Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif attended the Qul of Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer and condoled with the party office-bearers present there. Meanwhile, talking to late Salmaan Taseers wife Amna Taseer on the eve of the Soyem of Taseer, President Asif Ali Zardari said that Shaheed Salmaan Taseer wrote with his blood a new chapter in the history of PPPs continuing struggle for human rights, democracy and non-discrimination. The President said that Shaheed Salmaan Taseer was an undaunted political leader and a true follower of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in treading their path to martyrdom. He called a spade a spade and did not mince words in expressing what he believed to be true and right, the President said of Salmaan Taseer. Taseers courage and determination in espousing the causes of the marginalised sections of society and readiness to pay the highest price for it will continue to inspire many, he said. 'His defiant cry against bigotry and his loud and clarion call for defending marginalised sections of society will echo in the annals of time, he added. Salmaan Taseer was an asset of the party and did it proud, the President said. 'Few possess the courage of Shaheed Salmaan Taseer in standing up to bigots and fanatics, and fewer still the readiness to embrace martyrdom for it, Zardari said. The President said that Taseer was killed to sharpen the polarisation in the society to derail the democratic process using the faade of religion. He expressed the hope that all the dirty hands behind the crime will be exposed and punished in accordance with the law. The supreme sacrifice rendered by Shaheed Salmaan Taseer will not go in vain, the President further said. Zardari also prayed to Allah to grant the Shaheed a high place in heaven and asked Begum Salmaan Taseer to convey his condolences to other members of the bereaved family. Amna Taseer thanked the President saying that his words were a source of great strength in this hour of tragedy.
