President may address joint sitting of Parliament on 21st

ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari is likely to address joint sitting of the Parliament on 21st March, as after that the fourth parliamentary year of the parliament would start. Parliamentary sources told The Nation on Sunday that National Assembly Secretariat had almost compiled tentative calendar for fourth parliamentary year, which might be approved by the Speaker in the coming week. The sources said that President Zardari would highlight three years performance of the PPP-led ruling coalition and the challenges faced by the government. It is most likely that Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza would preside over the joint sitting. Bound by Article 56 of the Constitution to address the joint session of the Parliament at the start of every parliamentary year, President Zardari would address its fourth address to the joint sitting. When contacted, Parliamentary Affairs Adviser, Izhar Amrohi, confirmed that tentative calendar of fourth parliamentary year had been compiled and NA Speaker would shortly approve it. He said that new parliamentary year would begin after the address of the President. The third parliamentary year of the Parliament ended on March 4 (Friday). The sources said that the President in his address was expected to share the governments policy before the legislators of both the Houses. The address to the joint session by the President is coming at a time when the country is facing serious challenges including the law and order situation, economic downfall, price hike, gas shortage and other related issues. Political pundits are attaching great importance to the address in which the President is expected to announce a comprehensive strategy to cope with the internal as well external challenges being faced by the country. The sources said that all necessary arrangements for joint sitting including special seating arrangements for MPs of both the houses, approval of summary, security arrangements would be completed in process. The parliamentary sources said that special invitation cards would be dispatched to the dignitaries in a couple of days.
