Kohistanis threaten to disrupt Dasu Dam work

PESHAWAR - The residents of Kohistan district will not allow execution of construction wok on Dasu Dam, if their demands allocation of 20 per cent of the royalty and free of cost electricity from Dasu Hydro Power Project in Kohistan are not met. The Dasu Hydropower Project is a run-of-river scheme located 7-km upstream of Dasu village on Indus River, 74-km downstream of Diamer Bhasha Dam. The project is located in district Kohistan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As per law, it is a due right of the people from Kohistan to get a little share of the royalty from Dasu Dam, which the provincial government will receive in head of royalty from the Federal Government once the project start production, sources said. Listing out almost 15 demands by people from the area, is not a unique one, because they have the right to do so, however, under the law only 5 per cent of the total royalty is allocated to the area concerned where the project is located, the sources said. Yes, a list of some 15 demand has been received by the provincial government, an official of provincial government confirmed to The Nation while requesting anonymity. He said that said that dwellers from Kohistan have demanded more than that of their share. Sharing some demands with this scribe, they official sources said that besides 20 percent royalty and free of cost electricity, they have also demanded the establishment of a well-equipped modern vocational and training center in Dasu so that to train locals for working in the project. Moreover, in the same list, they have called for giving priority to locals in jobs. A net of colleges, schools and a University should also be established in Kohistan. They said that from the day one Kohistan, a mountainous district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has totally been ignored in education and other developmental projects, which they have termed an injustice with themselves. Sources said that Kohistan people have also threatened to move court for the acceptance of their demand. We would not allow work on the project, if their demand are not met accordingly, several people of the area raised their demand in a threatening tone. It is worth mentioning here that about three weeks back, the residents of Kohistan, particularly form those areas which have been badly affected by the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, had staged a series of protests and blocked main Kura Karakoram Highway against the delay in payment of the compensation for the land the government had acquired for the dam.
