TTP made Rs3b through extortion

ISLAMABAD - Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, a banned militant organisation, has generated funds to the tune of Rs 3 billion since 2008 through extortion, donations and kidnappings from three big cities including Karachi, Islamabad and Rawalpindi alone, official sources told TheNation on Thursday. “According to our investigation, the operatives of banned militant organisation are generating funds to keep TTP alive from big cities including Islamabad, Karachi and Rawalpindi through extortion, donations and kidnappings,” investigators said, adding that joint investigation teams were grilling as many as 78 militants and front men of TTP at three different stations of Islamabad and Karachi. According to officials of law enforcement agencies, TTP had faced huge damage after the law enforcement agencies had broke their network in Karachi conducting operations against them with the help of army.“They have recently established their network in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. We have shared intelligence with police of twin cities against them,” an official of Interior Ministry said, adding that joint investigation team of Rawalpindi and Islamabad could only manage to arrest front men of TTP on the base of information provided to them.On Thursday, a senior police officer of Islamabad police confirmed to TheNation that they had arrested alleged operatives of TTP who used to arrange funds for their organisation through extortion and kidnappings. “We are interrogating them. They have revealed that the money they raised by kidnapping and extorting is sent to training camps in tribal areas where militants plan terrorist acts,” said the police officer.
