The federal government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against the judgement striking down the Contempt of Court Act, 2012.
A decision to file the review petition was made after President Asif Ali Zardari met with coalition partners and Law Minister Farooq Naek last Sunday.
On August 3, the Supreme Court had declared the Contempt of Court Act 2012, unconstitutional and null and void.
The act was signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari on July 12 after it was adopted by a majority vote in both houses of Parliament.
In the appeal, the government’s counsel, Abdul Shakoor Paracha, stated that the law was only passed following proper legislative procedures practised by the parliament and that the parliament had the authority to legislate.
The filing of the appeal comes in the backdrop of the issuing of a show-cause notice for contempt of court to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf over his failure to implement the court’s directive of writing a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
