Farmers stage sit-in, demand subsidy

MUZAFFARGARH
Thousands of farmers staged a sit-in at the Chenab River bridge on Thursday on the call made by Kissan Ittehad.  They blocked the Multan-Muzaffargarh Road to press the authorities for acceptance of their demands. Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Khokhar told media, "We will continue the sit-in till the acceptance of our demands."
He demanded that support price of sugarcane should be fixed at Rs250 per 40 kg, wheat at Rs1,500 per 40 kg, and Phutti (Raw-cotton) at Rs4,000 per 40 kg, and subsidy on fertilisers should be waived and it should be paid to the farmers directly because they are forced to purchase the fertilisers in black marketing. He also demanded high speed diesel at 50% discount for agricultural purpose. He vowed to suspend the supply of food, milk, fruit and vegetables to urban areas from the fields in second phase if their demands were not met immediately.
ASP city Rao Arif Aslam said that about 1,000 growers staged the sit-in. However, the police had restored the flow of traffic. He said that protestors were peaceful and shouting slogans for their demands.
