Railway Colony residents, police clash in Quetta

QUETTA - The residents of Railway Colony staged a demonstration on Wednesday in Joint Road area against police action against encroachments.
The Supreme Court has ordered the authorities concerned to demolish the illegal property and clear the encroachments on the Railways land. The protesters burned tyres, blocked the road and pelted stones at police. Police resorted to aerial firing and teargas shelling to disperse the protesters. According to the police, they were taking action following court orders as some of the residents resisted the operation. A protester, Ahmed Wali, said they had been living in the colony for several decades and the demolition of their homes was injustice.
Talking to the media, Quetta Divisional Superintendent Maqbool Ahmed Magsi said the officials had acted on the court orders. The protesters threatened to halt train service and called upon the authorities to stop the action.
