ISLAMABAD - Interior Minister, Rehman Malik on Wednesday while appreciating the concept of community policing said that it would effectively help in decreasing the crime rate in the society. He said that community policing through the cooperation of police and people with each other through joint efforts could help in improving the security situation. Rehman Malik while appreciating the initiative said that civil society and especially youth could be engaged through it in assisting the law enforcers. Interior Minister Rehman Malik inaugurated the community policing system in federal capital in a ceremony held at National Library Auditorium. Senator Babar Awan, Inspector General Police (IGP) Islamabad, Wajid Ali Durrani, DIG (Operations) Bani Amin, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Islamabad, Tahir Alam Khan and a large number of civil society members attended the ceremony. The Minister also directed IGP to induct 50 persons in the capital police for community intelligence service. As per directives of President and Prime Minister, 32,000 persons will be imparted training of civil defence so to counter the situation in any emergency time, he said. Moreover, he also announced restoration of community based Chokidari System in the capital, adding this system would also be implemented in other parts of the country. He informed the participants that there was plan in pipeline to take action against power thieves, which would help the country in saving 25 per cent power for the national grid. Senator Babar Awan underscoring the importance of community policing system said police could not decrease crime rate without peoples support. He also assured the people that political and military leaderships were capable enough to safeguard the nuclear assets. In his welcome address, IGP Islamabad said people and police would work together to make the surroundings safe and secure. He said that ICT police had conducted collected data of those people living in rented houses and third survey in this regard would soon be completed. SSP Islamabad, Tahir Alam also highlighted the salient features of the community policing system on the occasion.
