MULTAN
The PPPP leadership has cancelled its Multan rally because of security concerns, declared a party spokesman. The procession was scheduled to take place on May 9.
“The public meeting is cancelled because of life threats given to Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani by defunct religious organisation, non-cooperation on part of district administration and impounding of public transport vehicles by the government,” said the PPPP Multan chapter office-bearers. “If the procession had been held, it would have been the only large-scale election-related activity of PPPP in South Punjab. Party patron Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had to deliver a video speech while many central leaders like former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, Ch. Aitazaz Ahsan, Raza Rabbani and Faisal Raza Abidi were to address the workers.”
The PPPP cancelled the event, claiming that Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani received security threats while the district administration also declined to cooperate.
It may not be out of place to mention here that Gillani address corner meetings in different areas of Multan in connection with the election campaign of his sons and there is no special security during these activities. A local PPPP leader, Kh Rizwan Alam, told journalists that PPPP Multan president Khurshid Khan submitted an application for the issuance of NOC for the public meeting nine days ago but the district administration did not give any reply so far.
