Shrines in interior Sindh under security threat

KARACHI - After the suicide blast at Data Darbar Lahore, three months back, the officials of Auqaf Department had sent requests to the District Police Officers (DPOs) concerned in written, for deployment of police personnel at the shrines in Sindh, but they did not heed to the security threats to shrines, officials informed to TheNation on Friday. During chat with a senior official of Auqaf Department of Sindh, it was also unveiled that the major shrines in Sindh had no sufficient provision of security measures, which were easy target of the terrorists. On the condition of anonymity, the official confirmed that in the aftermath of the suicide blast at Data Darbar in Lahore, the administrator of Auqaf Department had informed the police chief in districts for security threats. However, the police officers did not provide security at shrines to avoid any security threat and untoward event. After suicide blast at Dargah Hazrat Abullah Shah Ghazi in Karachi, the major shrines in Sindh were under security threats, as the Auqaf department has no sufficient resources to hire and deploy security guards at every shrine in the province, he warned. At least 189 Dargahs (shrines), and 80 mosques, come under the administrative control of the Auqaf Department, but the government did not provide budgetary allocations for the maintenance of shrines and salary of the employees of the department, official said, adding that the salaries and other expenditures were fulfilled from the donations, which philanthropists and pilgrims donated at shrines. The shrines of Sufi saints including great poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, in Bhitshah, Shrine of Qalandar Lal Shahbaz in Sehwan, Shrine of Hazrat Sachal Sarmast in Kharpur, Shrine of Shah Aqiq and Dargah Abdullah Shah Ashabi in Thatta and other shrines had no proper security arrangements. Meanwhile, the shrines in Sindh, especially in Karachi, which were closed after suicide blast at Dargah Abdullah Shah Gazi in, opened on Friday. Sindh Minister for Auqaf Abdul Haseeb told the media persons that all the shrines had been opened for the pilgrims. He also pointed out that the department had prepared a summary for financial grant of Rs20 million, for purchasing of security equipments including CCTV cameras, walk through gates and other machines for the safety of the pilgrims at the shrines, had been sent to the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, which yet to get nod from the CM. However, another official of the Auqaf Department told TheNation that the department was facing severe financial crunch presently. All the 750 employees of department were deprived of salaries for three months, due to the shortage of funds. He also said that another summary regarding budgetary allocations of Rs100 million had been sent to the Chief Minister for approval and hoped that the competent authorities would take suitable decision in that regard very soon.
