Niazi gets reward of his own mistakes: Asma

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court Bar Association Wednesday formed a high level committee comprising former presidents of LHCBA to probe into mishandling of Dr Sher Afgan Niazi and make it public, saying the MQM and the PML-Q were trying to fan the incident to use it for their nefarious purposes. The bar said the same fact is proved by the violence in Karachi that claimed eight lives. The general house of bar was convened to assess the situation after the incident of Afgan's mishandling on Tuesday. The house also through a resolution reposed full confidence in the leadership of Ch Aitzaz Ahsan, asking him to withdraw his resignation. The house also condemned attack on Mianwali District Bar Association and called for an independent inquiry into the incident. The resolution also deplored the statements of PML-Q and MQM leaders, demanding federal government to give exemplary punishment to the miscreants involved in May 12 mayhem in Karachi. The speakers were of the consensus view that the lawyers were not involved in manhandling of Dr Afgan rather it was a conspiracy to derail their ongoing movement and create confusion between parliament and lawyers. 'The lawyers were being blamed for beating up Niazi in an episode engineered by the presidency itself. The people who manhandled the minister were policemen in civvies,' speakers said during the emergency session of the LHCBA here Wednesday. They said since March 9, 2007, sorriest of the developments took place but those, who were trying to play up the incident, did not bother speaking about it. They added at a time when democratic forces were gaining strength, the dictator was trying to show the world that democracy was not right for the people of Pakistan. Human Rights activist and senior lawyer Asma Jhangir said the lawyers believed in anti-violence policy but what had happened with Mr Niazi was the 'reward' of his own mistakes he did while he was the part of dictatorial regime. She appreciated lawyers' leadership for condemning this incident saying they have shown brave heart despite the fact they faced worst humiliation on several occasions during their one year movement. She said lawyers would foil all attempts to create rift among them and weaken their movement. She said," we have to take the movement forward but it will only possible of we are united". Hamid Khan, a member of Pakistan Bar Council, blamed Musharraf for camouflaging lawyers' movement by sending secret agencies' people to deteriorate situation. He said the incident was the reaction of people who had developed hatred against Musharraf and his aides. He urged Musharraf to step down immediately. He said the lawyers would expose black sheep in their ranks and would punish them for bringing bad name to legal community. He warned that the lawyers would have to be more watchful because lawyers' movement is nearing its goal and such incident could spoil their dream of judges' restoration. President LHCBA Anwar Kamal said treatment meted out by Dr. Afgan was highly condemnable because no one is allowed to take law in his hands. He pointed out that lawyers had played the role of vanguard in all movements launched against dictatorships, for the rule of law and supremacy of constitution and parliament. He made it clear that lawyers movement would go on and the weekly rally would be taken out today (Thursday). Former President LHCBA Hafiz Abdur Rehman Ansari said general(r) Pervez Musharraf was frustrated by the lawyers relentless movement and he was making last attempt to survive by engineering such incidents. Ansari also lambasted MQM Chairman Altaf Hussain for using abusive language against lawyers and former federal minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed for saying that the assembly would not complete 90 days even. LHCBA secretary Rana Asadullah, Abdur Rasheed Qureshi advocate, Supreme Court Bar Association executive member Mian Abdul Qadoos, also spoke on the occasion. Meanwhile, the Lahore Bar Association also held its general house meeting and expressed the similar views, terming assault on Sher Afgan Niazi as a conspiracy of the caretaker government and the agencies. They also said the move was aimed at sabotaging lawyers' movement and to pose a threat to upcoming Punjab Government. Addressing a general council meeting of the bar at Aiwan-e-Adal on Wednesday, its president Manzor Qadir said that he was sure that no lawyers were involved in the attack on Niazi saying the if some one finds guilty the bar would immediately cancel his membership.
