ECP to proceed on degrees issue in next few days

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Election Commission of Pakistan shall proceed accordingly on fake degrees issue hopefully within a week or ten days in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. According to sources, the Commission is finalising modalities as to how the aggrieved parties are given a chance of hearing and a final opinion is established in presence of the representatives of the Higher Education Commission, respective universities and the Election Commission. We are deliberating on a mechanism and shall proceed further within a week or ten days, the sources at the Election Commission informed this news agency on Monday. We have held meetings to evolve a mechanism where proper investigation and hearing will be held accommodating the aggrieved party, these sources added. As many as 46 Parliamentarians and Members Provincial Assemblies are facing the charges of fake degrees after the Supreme Court had directed the HEC and the Election Commission to verify their degrees. According to the Election Commmission statistics, 46 degrees have been declared fake by the HEC out of total 1109 members of the Senate, National Assembly and the Provincial Assemblies as 60 have come to Houses after winning by-elections. Moreover, 22 degrees are not legible. During this controversy of degrees, the matter is finally with the Commission for further action and the Commission shall move accordingly. The Secretary Election Commission, the other day had informed media at the Commission that 90 per cent degrees were found valid as only 46 were declared fake by the HEC and 22 were not legible. It has also been learnt that the Commission shall invite members facing the charge of holding fake degrees, to prove the authenticity of their degrees as well as a representative from the HEC and the respective universities. It is also being ensured that degree holders of one university are given chance of hearing on validity of their certificates in one go and in a sequence one by one and so the cases are taken up in series one after the other university. During the deliberation, the members shall prove validity of their degrees and the HEC and university representatives shall contest their decisions on verification. However, it is yet to be determined as to how long this process will take till the final decision or action is initiated against the fake degree holders.
