Teachers facing problems as govt freezes funds for hiring

ISLAMABAD It seems that after the agitation of university employees, the Government wants schoolteachers and employees of Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) working in deferent school and colleges to take to the streets, as it has refused to give funds to them to hire residential accommodations. It has been learnt that there is great unrest among the teachers, as the Government has frozen the funds for hiring residential accommodations allocated for the teachers. In the current fiscal year, the Government had allocated Rs420 million to the Federal Directorate of Education for teachers in terms of hiring facility against the demand of Rs610 million but now the Government was citing financial constraints and stopped the funding. Earlier, the teaching and non-teaching staff of different schools and colleges was facing accommodation problems as well as the employees were denied funds to rent accommodations due to non-release of funds by the Government. And the Directorate had stopped registering new cases but now the Government had completely abandoned this facility. Faced with financial problems, the teachers are increasingly left with no option but to commit suicides or protest as no teacher can afford to rent a house on his own in such an expensive city and in the meagre salary, said a teacher requesting not to be named. Most of the teachers belong to other provinces and living in rented accommodations but now the Government has completely stopped the funding which is a very serious situation for already underpaid teacher community he added. Azhar Mehmood Awan, President Federal Government Teachers Association Islamabad, has also slammed the Governments decision to freeze the funds, which has created panic and unrest among the 5000 teachers who are using rented buildings. He on the behalf of teacher community has demanded of the Prime Minister and Education Minister to withdraw this decision or otherwise it would be a serious setback to the classroom activity in the educational institutions of Islamabad after few days. The Acting DG, FDE, Shaheen Khan, when contacted said, The education sector is already under-funded so I have written to the Secretary Education to ask the Government at least not to cut education budget and we are trying our level best to restore funds.
