PESHAWAR - Senator Rubina Khalid on Monday said that failure is not an option in the fight against polio and urged upon the electronic media to highlight the dates of the polio campaign in order to inform the general public about the deadly disease. She said this at the inauguration ceremony of the three-day anti-polio drive in the province here at Islamia College University Peshawar University.Deputy Director EPI Khyber Paktunkhwa Dr Jan Baz Afridi, Vice Chancellor of Islamia College University Prof. Dr Noor Jahan, Health Specialist UNICEF Dr Jamil, WHO Team Leader Dr UbaidUl Islam, faculty members, students and media persons attended the ceremony. Senator Rubina said that they need the national spirit to combat the polio from the country and the same zeal. She said that the negative propaganda against the vaccine launched by certain quarters is very unfortunate.She said that the Government or Health Department alone can’t fight the disease and urged the students to join the fight against polio.“Our children will have to go abroad for studies and for jobs and we don’t want to close down these few windows of opportunities for our coming generations”, she maintained. Giving breakup of the global polio cases, Deputy Director Expanded Programme on Immunization KP, Dr Jan Baz Afridi, said that 135 polio cases have been reported globally out of which 83 cases are from Nigeria, 17 from Afghanistan, 5 from Chad and 30 from Pakistan. Provincial Team Leader WHO, Dr Ubaidul Islam said that eradication of polio was possible as it is successfully wiped out from the world except three countries, where it continues to wreak havoc with the lives of children. He urged the students to be advocates of polio eradication and further strengthen the fight against the crippling disease.Health Specialist UNICEF, Dr Jamil, said that parents and elders have a moral and religious duty to vaccinate children against polio and to protect them from lifelong disability, as they are voiceless and can’t demand for their needs.Later, Dr Jan presented souvenirs to Senator Rubina Khalid and Vice Chancellor ICU Dr NoorJahan.
