Karzai brings the ‘spy spoil’

ANKARA  – As President Asif Ali Zardari landed in Turkey to attend the 7th Trilateral Summit of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey, President Karzai arrived with a big spoil at hand -- the recent suicide attack on his spy chief. On arrival, Turkish President Abdullah Gul hosted a dinner in honour of the visiting presidents and delegates at the Presidential Palace where they held informal talks. President Zardari is accompanied by a heavyweight entourage, including COAS General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, DG, ISI Lt-General Zaheer-ul-Islam, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jillani and others. The Trilateral Summit provides a comprehensive platform for promoting high-level political dialogue, security cooperation and economic development partnership among the three countries for bringing peace, stability and development in Afghanistan and the entire region."President Karzai will submit all the documents and evidence in hand to President Zardari, which suggest the attack was hatched in Quetta, and follow this up seriously," said Siamak Herawi, a spokesman for Karzai. While the Taliban have claimed responsibility for the bombing, Karzai said the raid was too sophisticated to have been carried out by the militant group."Bigger hands are involved," said Herawi, repeating a phrase often used by the Afghan leader after high-profile attacks. Pakistan has said it would assist in any investigation into the bombing, but also urged Karzai to provide evidence before levelling charges, and suggested Kabul look into any lapses in its own security arrangements that may have led to the raid.Speaking after the attack, Karzai stopped short of directly blaming his neighbour but said he knew "for a fact the bomber came from Pakistan and that Kabul would seek clarification from Islamabad during meetings in Turkey”. Foreign ministers and senior officials from the two states will also meet at the summit. At the Ankara airport, President Zardari was received by Pakistan's ambassador to Turkey Muhammad Haroon Shaukat and senior officials of foreign office and Pakistan's embassy in Turkey, besides high-ranking officials of the Foreign Office of Turkey while Mr Burhan Kayaturk, Chairman Pak-Turkey Parliamentary Friendship Group and ambassadors of the two countries were also present.
