Islamabad - Villagers in Islamabad suburbs on Wednesday bricked to death two policemen after they reportedly shot dead an alleged drug peddler.
The gory incident took place in the wee hours in village Dora that lies in Tarnol Police jurisdiction. ASI Ramzan and constable Ansar Abbas of Ramna Police Station raided a house in the village and questioned a resident about the presence of drug dealers.
According to eyewitnesses, ASI Ramzan shot at an alleged drug peddler named Nadeem after he exchanged hot words with them. Nadeem succumbed to injuries prompting the villagers to get hold of the policemen and informer Muhammad Hayat.
Eyewitnesses said that a mob of around 50 villagers took the policemen to a nearby house and they beat them black and blue with bricks, hockey sticks and iron rods. ASI Ramzan, it is said, was killed within 15 minutes while constable Ansar, who was beaten for around an hour, pleaded to be shot dead to end his suffering.
Informer Muhammad Hayat, who led the policemen to the house of alleged drug peddler, got multiple injuries and was taken to PIMS for treatment. After the incident, police teams rushed to the scene and arrested a dozen of accused villagers. Nadeem’s family said he was to get married within few days.
“It is true that villagers have beaten the cops to death. One civilian too was killed. The Inspector General of Islamabad Police has requested Islamabad deputy commissioner to conduct judicial inquiry of the incident,” a spokesperson of Capital Territory Police said.
Sources told The Nation that the murdered policemen were from Ramna Police Station and they were not authorised to raid a suspected house in jurisdiction of Tarnol Police. An official source confirmed that the deceased policemen did not inform the Tarnol Police about the raid. Tarnol Police registered an FIR against 25 people under section 302,324 PPC.
The Nation Monitoring adds: BBC Urdu quoted Tarnol Police in-charge Mian Ashraf as refuting the claim that the policemen fired on the alleged drug pusher. He said that it were some unknown persons who shot Nadeem dead. Police sources also told this foreign media outlet that the police did not go to the area to get the bodies of the murdered policemen and it was in fact some influential locals who took the bodies to the hospital, where their post-mortem was conducted.
Local police also said that the area concerned is a hub of drug traffickers and outlaws. They admitted that drug dealers are operating in the area openly and being fearful of the powerful drug dealers, police officials don’t take any action against them.
The intelligence agencies in their reports to the interior ministry have also that a large number of members of proscribed militant organisations have also taken refuge in the area, after they were flushed by the security forces from the tribal areas close to Afghanistan.
