FO mum on french veil ban

ISLAMABAD - Lack of a coherent policy either at individual state level or at the level of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) to tackle emerging challenges relating to ban on Hijab or headscarf in some western countries, has deepened concerns of Muslim women living in those countries. This is unfortunate that none of the Muslim countries had taken initiative against the western countries, which adopted a discriminatory policy, sources told The Nation on Tuesday. Pakistan Foreign Office also remained oblivious in taking appropriate initiative in this connection to address these challenges. Despite repeated attempts there has been no response from the Foreign Office when this scribe tried to seek input on the issue. Similarly, there has been no initiative either from any other Muslim country or OIC to address these challenges being faced by Muslim women living in the western countries. Sources were of the view that such an initiative was of paramount importance to ensure personal liberty of the Muslim women, who want to continue with their Islamic traditions and customs while living in the western countries. This negation of fundamental right to Muslim women living in the western countries is violation of the UN Charter on Human Rights, the sources said, emphasising the need for a collective initiative by OIC to address these challenges. They suggested that OCI should at least adopt a resolution in this connection with clear policy that if Muslim women were not allowed to follow their Islamic traditions then policies should be framed for the Western women to follow Islamic traditions while living in the Muslim countries.
