LAHORE - Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khan Baig has revealed that there are reports that militants were plotting terror attacks in the province and target high-profile personalities and key government installations.
Talking to media persons after addressing the head-money distribution ceremony at the Central Police Office (CPO) on Thursday, he said the VVIP’s security plan had also been revised to thwart the nefarious designs of anti-sate elements. “The militants’ hit-list is lengthy. They are planning synchronised attacks to target politicians, sensitive installations and important persons in the Punjab province,” the police chief explained. Following the deadly assault on Karachi airport, the security has been tightened across the province, he added.
The IGP also said that security of Lahore airport, sensitive installations, business centers, and public places had also been intensified. Police are also taking special measures to ensure foolproof security for the political and religious leaders and renowned media personalities. After some changes, the final security plan would be implemented across the province. The Punjab police are prepared and quite capable to meet all types of security challenges, he maintained.
Earlier, the provincial police chief distributed cash prizes worth three million rupees among 45 officers of five districts –Lahore, Rahim Yar Khan, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Kasur – for showing commendable performance. Four officers were given appreciation certificates while three police informers were also given cash prizes for helping police hunt down the criminals.
On this occasion, Khan Baig said that the arrests of the hardened criminals would not only downgrade the crime graph in the province but also improve sense of security among the people.
Responding to a question, he said that during this fiscal year major portion of the budget would be spent on operational activities and police would be equipped with new vehicles, high tech gadgets and modern weapons, and given best training.
Punjab Additional IG Sarmad Saeed Khan, Additional IG (Investigation) Khaliq Dad Lak and SSP (Investigation) Waqas Hassan were also present on this occasion, besides other senior officers.
