First Canadian Senator of Pak origin calls on PM

ISLAMABAD (Online) Senator Salma Attaullah Jan, the first Canadian lady of Pakistan origin who was designated as Senator by the Canadian Prime Minister Harper to the Senate from his Conservative Party this July, called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani at the Prime Ministers House here on Friday. Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani thanked the Government of Canada for its generous support for the flood affectees of Pakistan. According to handout issued here on Friday, Canadian Government has mat-ched the equal amount of assistance generated by Canadian charities, NGOs and civil society for Pakistans flood victims. The Prime Minister while congratulating Senator Salma Attaullah Jan on joining the Canadian Senate commended her contributions for mobilizing funds for the flood affectees of Pakistan through a series of fund raisers and for running a charity organization to build a school for the poor children in Pakistan. The Prime Minister noted that 300000 strong Pakistani diaspora in Canada was serving as a bridge to foster closure ties between the two countries. He urged the Senator to mobilize the Pakistani community for strengthening the economic and investment link between Canada and Pakistan. The Prime Minister hoped that Senator would join Canada-Pakistan Parliamentary Group which has been there since 2003 and worked for promoting the parliamentary exchanges between the two countries. Senator Salma assured the Prime Minister that being the member of the Canadian Senate Committees on banking, human rights and women empowerment, she will strive to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries and address the misperception about Pakistan on the women rights issues. She also stated that she would devote her energies to bridge Pakistan and Canada even closure by seeking expansion of the existing bilateral cooperation in the diverse fields. As regards the assistance for the flood affectees, she mentioned that the amount collected including the matching equal amount by the Canadian Government has reached up to Canadian dollars 52 million.
