BAHAWALNAGAR - Scores of sugarcane farmers staged a demonstration here in Chishtian against the low price of sugarcane being offered by Adam Sugar mills.
A large number of sugarcane farmers gathered at Fowara Chowk and protested against the low cane price being offered by sugar mill here the other day. The protesters chanted slogans against the mill management, set ablaze tyres and threw traffic out of gear for an hour.
On the occasion, farmers representatives Fakhar Mehmood, Ahmad Yar and others said that the mill management had been exploiting the local farmers for years by forcing the farmers to sell commodity at lower rate. They also alleged that the mill management also weigh short, depriving the farmers of their right. They demanded the Punjab Chief Minister to take notice of the highhandedness and exploitation of the farmers and fix the support price of sugarcane Rs170 per mound. Later, Chishtian AC Ahad Dogar assured the farmers that their grievances would be addressed and the problem would be solved. Later, the farmers dispersed peacefully.
