Polio vaccines given to OBL kids

ISLAMABAD - Stark contradictions shroud the reports regarding the CIA-sponsored fake vaccination campaign in order to track down worlds biggest terrorist Osama bin Laden. The information based on discussions with the residents of Thanda Choha, where OBL hideout located, as well as officials of Abbottabad city administration suggest that the district administration had initiated polio vaccination campaign as a part of anti-polio drive launched in several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Hazaras Abbottabad, Haripur, Mansehra and Kala Dhaka (Torghar) and not the hepatitis B vaccination drive, earlier this year. The DCO of every district monitored the polio vaccination drive. In Abbottabad, the Executive District Officer (EDO) following the directives of District Coordination Officer (DCO) reportedly sent health teams for polio vaccination to Thanda Choha and other areas. Two lady health visitors affiliated with one of the Basic Health Units (BHUs), working under the KP Health Department, had administered polio drops in the OBL hideouts area. Dr Shakil Afridi led this vaccination campaign. On the other hand, sections of international media report that Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had sponsored fake hepatitis B vaccination campaign with the help of Dr Shakil Afridi, reportedly a CIA operative, so as to acquire the DNA samples of OBL and his family members to ascertain if the OBL resided in the suspected compound. For months, Afridi and a team of nurses administered hepatitis B vaccines in Bilal Town, the suburb where bin Laden lived, according to these reports which say that the operation did not succeed and one of the nurses managed to enter into the OBL hideaway. Osamas immediate neighbour Aurangzeb Khan told TheNation on telephone from Abbottabad that no hepatitis vaccination team had ever visited the area, not in the recent past at least. He said his grandchildren were also vaccinated against polio during the anti-polio campaign. He said the health team administering the vaccination was not allowed to enter any house and instead children under five years of age were brought out of their homes for this purpose. Aurangzeb, the two LHVs and some other locals were rounded up by the security agencies on May 3 in connection with OBL operation and were released some days after. According to him, Dr Shakil Afridi was also nabbed immediately after OBL operation and he was still under detention along with some other suspects. Muhammad Rasheed, the grocery seller whose shop was frequently visited by OBL children and servants, said the reports about fake vaccination did rounds in Thanda Choha after several children in the area caught viruses like diarrhoea and cholera. The children caught sicknesses due to change in weather and it led to spread of rumours. Its all based on hearsay, he said, adding that OBL children were vaccinated outside their house and the health team did not enter the hideout. The responsible officials in Abbottabads district administration said the health teams for vaccination against polio were dispatched to various areas of the district in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO). Melinda and Gates Foundation backed these initiatives, officials said. In the story titled, 11 suspects arrested near Osama hideout, printed on May 4 this year, this newspaper had unearthed the news regarding arrests of the two LHVs, Aurangzeb Khan, OBL milkman Zaina Kaka and some other locals.
