Gilani phones Altaf, Asfand

ISLAMABAD - Following the recent spate of target killings in Karachi, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has a detailed telephonic conversation with MQM chief Altaf Hussain and ANP President Asfandyar Wali on the issue and discussed various options to bring lasting peace to the port city. The Prime Minister directed the Federal Interior Minister to reach Karachi immediately and coordinate the strategy with the Sindh government as well as the MQM and ANP leadership. He also asked him to keep him posted over the developments. Sources in PPP informed The Nation that the Prime Minister discussed the option of granting more powers to Rangers to protect the lives of peaceful citizens and to contain the activities of miscreants who were killing the innocent people at their will. Sources in ANP informed that Asfandyar Wali Khan had time and again said that Karachi should be handed over to Army as only the Armed Forces of the country could launch an evenhanded operation against the outlaws. It was MQM, which was opposing the military operation against the miscreants in the port city and their leadership was of the view that Rangers should be deployed with limited scope, a source in PPP informed this scribe.
