MQM, ANP trade allegations

KARACHI - Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party on Friday traded allegations regarding law and order situation in Karachi. The MQM condemned the target killing of Urdu speaking people in the metropolis and claimed that terrorists had killed more than 21 Urdu speaking people since Thursday last. Addressing an hurriedly called press conference at Khursheed Memorial Hall, MQM Deputy Parliamentary Leader in Sindh Assembly, Faisal Sabzwari, said that more than 21 people belonging to Urdu Speaking (Mohajir) community were killed by the terrorists, saying that target killings of Urdu speaking people was started after the killing of a journalist. He pointed out that the deceased journalist covered the operation of law enforcement agencies at Pehalwan Goth and was killed by the terrorists at Liaquatabad when he returned home. He alleged that ANP was supporting criminal mafia in Pehalwan Goth. He regretted the allegations of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister against MQM, saying, "If we accept the allegations of ANP leadership over the killing of the journalist then Mian Iftikhar should accept the fact that ANP leader Bashir Khan was targeted at Mecasa Apartment area, which was the centre of ANP workers." He further alleged that Sindh CM's pilot Iqbal Kashmiri was killed at Rabia City, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, adding everybody in the country knew that Rabia City was under the control of ANP activists. He asked the ANP leadership why they had given a freehand to their activists for killing Urdu Speaking people in Orangi Town, Rabia City, Banaras, Kati Pahari and other areas. The MQM leader demanded of President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Governor Sindh Ishrat-ul-Ebad to hold impartial probe into the murder of local TV channel's reporter and arrest the culprits. Monitoring Desk adds: Awami National Party's Sindh Pesident Shahi Syed on Friday has demanded for a military operation in Karachi, reported a private TV channel. Addressing a news conference in Karachi, Syed said that the citizens of the city were left on the mercy of the terrorists. He strongly condemned the ongoing killings of innocent people in the metropolis and demanded an immediate military operation to curb the menace. He said that innocent people were being targeted and peace of the city could not be restored until action against extortion mafia should be taken. He said that political parties should cooperate for peace. He demanded of the Supreme Court to take suo moto action on target killings in Karachi.
