ANP efforts to help rivals bury the hatchet turn fruitless

SWABI - The measures adopted by Awami National Partys (ANPs) provincial leadership to arrange reconciliation between two rival groups of the party could not yield any positive result. According to details, following the directives of the party leadership, Jehan Zeb Khan arranged on Thursday a luncheon but Rehmanullahs group did not attend it. Both Rehmanullahs group and Jehan Zeb Khans group met at Bacha Khan Markaz in the presence of provincial leaders Latif Afridi, Imran Afridi and Baz Muhammad Khan on July 7 and struck a verbal agreement that they would not talk against one another. To further consolidate the agreement, it was decided that each of the groups would arrange a lunch or dinner party for the leaders of the rival groups, so that it could help them bury the hatche and kick off a new journey of fraternity. Before the Bacha Khan Markaz agreement, the provincial leaders visited the district and met with leaders of the rival groups but failed to break the deadlock. After the Bacha Khan Markaz talks, Khan told this correspondent taht the provincial leaders agreed to give 5,000 copies of the membership to his group. However, he warned, If a single copy was given to Rehmanullahs group, we would not fill up the membership copies as leaders but just as workers. The Rehmanullah group had already received 6000 copies. When contacted, Salim Khan, former provincial general secretary of ANP, told this correspondent that both Latif Afridi and Imran Afridi attended the launch party at Jehan Zeb Khans residence along with the other leaders but Rehmanullah and his supporters did not turn up due to unknown reasons. After the lunch the provincial leaders held talks with Khans group and discussed the new developments and strategy as to what should be done in the emerging scenario and as to how the new situation could be tackled in best interest of the party. When contacted, Rehmanullah said, We have entered in an agreement in Bacha Khan Markaz when we agreed that we would not talk against each other. However, Jehan Zeb Khan Group held a meeting in Yar Hussain and openly criticised our group. So the verbal agreement has no longer remained intact. That was the reason that we did not attend the party and decided to stay away. He said his group upheld the agreement but violated by his rivals. In such scenario how was it possible to attend the party? However, he admitted they were invited by Khan Group. Insiders said the rivalry was very much there and the situation would become more worsen in the next few days. They said the nomination of Tapa leaders was expected to be completed after which they would elect the district office-bearers. They said the rivalry was expected to reach a new height in the coming days, as the membership drive would end on July 15, followed by very crucial stage of nomination of the district leaders. They said huge financial resources would be used by both the groups and some of them had already started manoeuvring. They predicted the stage had already set for worst situation, which is expected to leave a bad impact on the party in the district, considered by the party leadership a stronghold. The reconciliation was a challenge for senior leaders, Latif Afridi and others, they said, adding that if they failed then there was a possibility that Azam Hoti or Asfandyar Wali Khan might be rushed to settle their rivalry. They agreed if anyone of the two distinguished leaders came here then there would be no rivalry.
