QUETTA - At least eight tankers carrying fuel for Nato forces stationed in Afghanistan were destroyed in an attack by unidentified attackers in Bawani area of Hub, an industrial town of Balochistan province, on Sunday night.
Unidentified armed men attacked a convoy of up to 16 oil tankers parked at a private terminal in Bawani area at around 8:00 pm, said Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, the district police officer in Lasebla. He said eight oil tankers were completely gutted. The police officer denied it was a rocket attack, and said initial reports suggested it was an improvised explosive device that had been detonated remotely. He further said there was also the possibility that some people had ambushed the tankers. Cheema however stated police would be able to give details about the incident once the fire was put out and investigation started.
Following the attack, national highway connecting Quetta to Karachi was closed several hours for all kinds of traffic. However, no loss of life was reported in the attack.
There was no immediate claim about the responsibility for the assault. On Friday, nine NATO oil tankers were destroyed in Saryab area of Kalat district in which one of the drivers was killed.
