Kayani discusses border situation with Karzai

ISLAMABAD (Online) - Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Thursday met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai who was in Islamabad on a two-day visit. According to sources, ISAF commander in Afghanistan Gen David Petraeus, DG ISI Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha and the chiefs of Afghan Army and the intelligence were also present during the meeting. Matters relating to regional security, Pak-Afghan border situation and the cooperation between Pakistan, Afghanistan and ISAF in war against terror were discussed in detail. Sources said the Afghan president lauded the role and sacrifices made by the Pak Army for elimination of terror and said in order to defeat the extremist, the two countries needed to devise a strategy keeping in view the ground realities. He said the Afghan govt was only negotiating with those Taliban who did not have any link with Al-Qaeda and they wanted peace and stability. During the meeting, views were also exchanged on enhancing security and intelligence cooperation to control border infiltrations. Stress was also made on effective contact and cooperation between Pakistani and Afghan security forces and the intelligence agencies for holding a peaceful parliamentary election in Afghanistan, which are being held tomorrow. They also had in-depth look into the issues concerning new offensive against Taliban in Afghanistan.
