Livestock dying of hunger in flood-hit areas

ISLAMABAD - Apart from killings of human beings, thousands of livestock have been died and misplaced in the flash floods and now the survival of live animals is believed to be under threat due to non-availability of fodder. The animals in flood-affected areas, especially buffaloes, goats, sheep, are dying due to paucity of fodder and grass, as the green lands have turned into rivers. Most of these livestock are affected in southern Punjab where floods have displaced around three million people. The community of these affected rural areas have faced triple evacuation as the deluge continuously created destruction compelling them to go to next/other safer places. In the doomsday like situation, it was not possible to have a look on our livestock, said a flood victim from Kot Addu, adding, Now our buffaloes, sheep and goats have started dying due to paucity of fodder in the area. In this horrible situation when people are displaced and kept awaiting relief goods and food items, there is least possibility of expecting fodder for animals. A human being can communicate its woes and worries but animals can not ask for food despite the fact that it is their basic need for survival, said a shepherd from Muzaffargarh while talking about his animals. A cattleman from Baseera village while narrating his sad story said that he with his family reached a safer place but his two buffaloes were misplaced. Now I am much worried and dont know how to feed for remaining buffaloes as fodder or grass is not available, he added. It would not be out of place to mention here that dead animals creating stinking smell have been lying in different areas, especially in the hinterlands of Kot Addu, Sannawa and Dera Din Panah. Furious floods did not give us time to save our livestock, as in that situation we hardly managed to save our own lives and there was no time to bring livestock with us at safer places, said another flood affectee while narrating his sad tale. A group of people from the area has urged the authorities concerned to arrange fodder for their livestock, which are dying before their eyes.
