QUETTA - The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave the deadline of September 23 to all the four provinces to announce schedule for local bodies’ elections.
The deadline was given by the apex court while hearing a petition on the local bodies’ elections. The advocate generals of the three provinces and counsel for the Balochistan government, Shahid Hamid, appeared before the court.
The counsel for the Balochistan government said the Balochistan cabinet would be formed within two days after which a schedule for the conduct of the local bodies’ elections would be announced.
The chief justice remarked, “We are not compelling you, but this is what the law says.” The Punjab advocate general said his government was prepared to hold the elections. He, however, added it would be better if all the provinces held such polls simultaneously. He further said a meeting of the CMs of all the four provinces was scheduled in Islamabad to take a decision about the local bodies’ elections.
The CJP remarked the issue of local bodies’ elections was of a provincial nature, so the federal government should not be involved in it. The court gave five days’ time to the provinces to announce a schedule for the local bodies’ elections.
Later, the court was adjourned until 23rd of September.
