MIRPUR (AJK) - Independent candidates as well as political parties girding up loins for contesting the scheduled June 26 general elections in Azad Jammu Kashmir have been warned of stringent action in case of violation of the code of conduct, being unveiled by the AJK Election Commission, to ensure holding of the polls in a free, fair and peaceful atmosphere, official sources said. In separate meetings of the prospective candidates as well as the local heads of various political parties were enthusiastically preparing for jumping into the field to contest the scheduled AJK Legislative Assembly elections, at various district and tehsil headquarters of Azad Jammu Kashmir including in Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimbher districts of this division Wednesday the impending candidates decided to strictly honour the code of conduct to be determined by the AJK elections commission to ensure maintenance of peace and order. Besides the party heads, the prospective candidates and district heads of various political parties as well as independent candidates from various constituencies of the district, held meetings. The meetings were conduced to advise the upcoming candidates to honour the code of conduct to maintain peace and order during the polls. The candidates and the parties workers were advised to observe the code of conduct in letter and spirit during the entire elections process. The audience were informed that there might be a complete ban on holding public meetings and bringing out processions besides on the display and use of all kind of arms. Referring to the proposed code of conduct, informed sources told The Nations AJK Staffer AH Rao here Wednesday that, a candidate will be allowed to hold only one corner meeting in his or her electoral constituency as part of election campaign and that too in the four walled premises. The use of loudspeakers as well use or display of any kind of arms and fire crackers, wall chalking and display of big banners might also be strictly banned during the elections process as announced by the AJK Election Commission. No candidate will be allowed to use any place of public utilization including roads for the purpose of election congregation or corner meeting, they added. The Election Commission of AJK is seriously contemplating to declare that no any candidate or their supporter will be allowed to move into a procession during the course of filing of the nomination papers in the office of the concerned Returning officers. The contestant candidates might be allowed to display the publicity paper measuring 12 inches-by-12 inches. The candidates might also be allowed to establish their polling camps 200 meter away of the concerned polling stations, according to the proposed code of conduct, the sources said. Stringent legal action will be initiated against the violators of the code of conduct.
