'Floods caused Rs12b loss to GB govt'

ISLAMABAD - Killing as many as 184 people, displacing another 85,000 and destroying roads infrastructure of 947 kilometres, the unprecedented floods have caused Rs 12 billion loss the exchequer of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). Chief Minister GB Syed Mehdi Shah disclosed this while addressing a joint press briefing along with Managing Director Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal Zamurud Khan regarding flood relief activities here on Friday. The Chief Minister informed that Karakoram Highway has been badly affected and it would take about seven weaks to repair it. He said that thousands of people are affected due to destruction caused by the floods and land up to 72,000 kanal has been destroyed due to the worst floods in the history of the country. He informed that around 182 bridges have been washed away due to the heavy rains and floods have also destroyed the bridge linking Pakistan with China. The road link between Skardu and rest of the country has been closed down for traffic and there is no communication between district to district he added. And the only option left with the local administration is to rescue people through helicopter service, he further added. Speaking on the occasion MD PBM Zamurud Khan said PBM would provide food items to 75,000 people, whereas Sehr and Iftar packages would be distributed among 20,000 people. He said within few days relief goods up to 25 trucks would be send to Gilgit- Baltistan and more efforts are underway to provide maximum relief goods to the floods affected areas on war footing. PBM is also all set to distribute food supplements to 50,000 children up to 5 years, he continued. He announced on the occasion that PBM is ready to adopt such children who lost their families due to the devastating floods and requested people to bring such children to the PBM shelter homes. PBM would continue to contribute to help the countrymen in this difficult time, he added.
