Pakistan social media abuzz with pro and anti government debates

Islamabad- As the Pakistan government and protesters were locked in an intense standoff in the capital, pitched battles were also being fought on the social media with 'IamNawaz' and 'GoNawazGo' trending on Twitter.

Social networking websites in Pakistan were abuzz with different trends, arguments and debates in support or opposition of political parties. Supporters of Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Canada-based cleric Tahirul Qadri's Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) are staging a sit-in outside the Parliament House in a bid to depose Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over alleged rigging in last year's general election.

Top trends in Pakistan on Twitter were #IamNawaz, #GoNawazGo, #RedZone, #ChaloChaloIslamabadChalo and #AwamiParliament.

Political leaders were not far behind in taking swipes at each other on the social media.
"Sharif brothers will continue to run government even after resigning. FIR against them cannot be registered till end of the government," Qadri tweeted.
Khan has been regularly tweeting about his course of action and demands. "I want all Pakistanis to get here breaking all barriers. Warning police to release our people or we will punish them for unlawfully detaining our people," he tweeted. "When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty." Yesterday we took a giant step for Naya Pakistan and democracy," he said.

Coming to the defence of her father, Maryam Nawaz Sharif has been actively tweeting, taking on Khan and Qadri. "Pakistanis, PMLN stand behind their leader & Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Anti-Pakistan elements identified & singled out," Maryam tweeted. "In the aftermath of this hooliganism, the facts and actuality that inevitably will surface will haunt these traitors in the garb of leaders," she said.

The Pakistan People’s Party has not actively taken sides in the confrontation but that has not deterred Bilawal Bhutto Zardari from tweeting his views on the political scenario. "On the one hand there is @ImranKhanPTI & his political suicide attack on democracy. On the other hand there's a suicidal government that will take democracy with it if it dies now.” “If only PPP and other left parties were free to campaign in 2013 we would have a government with real mandate to solve Pakistan’s many issues," he tweeted.
