KARACHI- Sindh Minister for Local Government, Owais Muzaffar Tappi, escaped an armed attack during a raid on illegal water hydrants in Malir area of Karachi on Sunday.
The attack from unidentified gunmen came when Tappi along with officials of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board reached an illegal water hydrant in Jumma Goth of Malir area. Luckily, the minister and all others escaped the attack unhurt.
Senior Superintend of Police Nasir Aftab said investigation was in progress and there would be major headway soon.
Following the incident, station house officers of Sharafi Goth and Korangi industrial area, Ikhlaq Ahmed and Imdad Khawaja, were placed under suspension for patronizing the mafia operating illegal hydrants.
Tappi along with water board team raided illegal hydrants in Chakra Goth, Rehri Goth, Gulshan-e-Buner, Jumma Goth, Korangi Industrial area and Sharafi Goth, and demolished around 20 illegal water hydrants.
The minister said the crackdown against illegal hydrants would continue until their complete eradication.
He said officials of KW&SB was found involved in patronising illegal water hydrants, they would be sacked.
Tappi also reprimanded KW&SB Deputy Managing Director Najamuddin Sheikh over delay in operation against illegal water hydrants.
