ISLAMABAD - In a new twist to the missing NATO/ISAF containers scam, State Minister for Privatisation, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan on Wednesday told the Senate that NATO/ISAF has informed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) that none of their containers is missing.
Answering a question posed by Senator Nisar Muhammad during the question hour session, Engr Khurram Dastgir Khan said tat NATO and ISAF, in response to the correspondence of Government of Pakistan, had told FBR in black and white that their no container was missing at all.
He, talking on behalf of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, said that there were two investigation reports on the missing NATO containers scam and both vary about the total number of missing containers. "In the first investigation report, the number of total missing containers was 7800 while in the second report, this number is only 2800," he said.
He further said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was investigating the scam on the directions of Supreme Court of Pakistan and a final action would be taken in the light of SC directions as well as NAB inquiry report.
The apex court had taken a suo motu notice in 2010 on the NATO/ISAF missing containers scam.
Senator Nisar Muhammad through his written question had asked the Finance Minister whether it was a fact that a number of NATO containers disappeared on their way to Afghanistan while passing through Pakistan and thus caused a heavy loss to the national kitty in terms of customs duty? He had further asked about the number of persons involved in the scam and the action taken against them?
