Madaris agree to revise syllabus, NA informed

ISLAMABAD - The National Assembly was informed on Monday that the leadership of Itthad Tanzeemat-e-Madaris Pakistan (ITMP) had signed an agreement with the government for bringing reforms in madaris (seminaries). As per the agreement, the madaris would not only include compulsory contemporary subjects in their curricula but would also avoid teaching or publishing any literature, which could promote militancy or spread sectarianism, said Minister for Interior Rehman Malik, during the question-hour of the National Assembly session here. Responding to another question regarding achievement of the targets in the light of recommendations made under the Jail Reforms 1997, the minister said that it was a fact that objectives and targets have not been achieved fully in the light of the recommendations made under the jail reforms 1997 in the Punjab prisons. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government, in a written reply, said that it had achieved many goals while the governments of Sindh and Balochistan did not respond to the question sent to them by the Interior Ministry in this regard. The minister, in a written reply, said that no proposal was under consideration of the government to upgrade the jails in Punjab at present under the guidelines of UNO. To another question, Federal Minister for Law Babar Awan told the House that as many as 6,273 projects of ERRA with a cost of Rs120 billion were still under construction. In a written reply, he said that ERRAs projects could be divided into three major groups comprising early recovery, housing and infrastructure. Early recovery, he said, has been completed at the cost of Rs 132 billion. He further said that the housing sector including urban housing programme has been completed with Rs 3.6 billion. The Rural housing programme, he said, has been completed with a cost of Rs 73 billion. Infrastructure projects, he said, have been completed projects with the cost of Rs 135 billion. To another question, Minister for Privatisation Syed Naveed Qamar said that presently there was no proposal to privatise the sick units. However, he said that the Privatisation Commission intends to privatise some units in near future.
