RAWALPINDI - Punjab Emergency Service (PES) Rescue 1122 on Tuesday observed Earth Day by organising a cycle rally.
The cycle rally was started from Chandni Chowk and culminated at Rawal Road. The participants were carrying banners, leaflets, booklets inscribed with information about Earth Day to create awareness among general public.
Dr Rizwan Naseer, director general PES Punjab, on this occasion said, "This is our land and we have to make it green for our and its safety. The day reminds us the importance of climate." He said that community participation in awareness rally was the symbol of ownership by the community and if joint efforts were not made on priority basis by the general public, media and corporate sector to rescue earth, the community might face environmental emergencies in the coming years. He appreciated rescuers and volunteers for organising 'Earth Cycle Rally.'
PES Rescue 1122 in collaboration with civil society, NGOs, educational and government institutions organised cycle rallies and conducted awareness activities in all districts of Punjab.
In Lahore, the Waste Management Company celebrated World Earth Day in collaboration with Lahore Zoo.
A range of activities involving tree plantation, awareness walk, symbolic waste picking and a drawing competition with this year’s theme of World Earth Day “Green Cities” were conducted.
Lahore Zoo Director Naeem Bhatti, LWMC Manager Communication Raza Khan and Regional Manager Albayrak Fareeha Shad started the campaign by planting trees. Lahore Zoo Deputy Director Mudassar Hassan, Education Officer Kiran Saleem, Assistant Manager Communication Umair Khan and Asad Ahmad also participated in this campaign.
An awareness walk and a symbolic waste picking activity was also conducted on the Zoo premises in which students of University of Central Punjab, KIPS School System and students of local schools also participated. Participants briefed the visitors about the importance of World Earth Day and distributed leaflets.
The Zoo director said that integrated efforts needed to be done to protect the environment. Turkish company Albayrak made special cleanliness arrangements in and around the zoo at this occasion.
Assistant Manager Operations Sidra Khawar supervised the cleanliness operations. Similar events were arranged to mark the day.
