ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah have agreed to come up with fresh names to fill the slot of Chairman National Accountability Bureau and would be meeting again soon for the purpose.
Sources close to Leader of Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah informed The Nation that the decision in this connection was made when Prime Minister Sharif visited the residence of Leader of Opposition to offer Fateha for his sister who had died in the recent past.
After the refusal of Justice (retd) Rana Baghwandas and Kh Zaheer to accept the slot of Chairman NAB even in case of their selection by the Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition the consultation process between the two came to a halt.
Now both the leaders have agreed to come up with fresh names to fill the slot and then with mutual consultation they would try to evolve consensus on any of the four names, sources further said.
Even before their meeting on Thursday there was a broader understanding between the treasury and main opposition that the matter of appointment of new chairman NAB as well as Chief Election Commissioner would be finalised at political level and they would not let it go to some third entity (Supreme Court of Pakistan) for final decision.
Sources aware of the contacts between the PML-N and PPP further informed that now the Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition would come up with fresh names and a meeting between the two would be held sometime in next couple of weeks to fill the slot of Chairman NAB vacant for last couple of months.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Prime Minister had given the names of Kh Zaheer and Justice (retd) Rehmat Jafferi while Syed Khursheed Shah had floated the names of Justice (retd) Rana Baghwandas and Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan. But the process of consultation could not proceed further because Kh Zaheer and Justice (retd) Rana Baghwandas had expressed their inability to take the responsibility even if picked with consensus by treasury and opposition.
Sources close to PPP further said that during the interaction both Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition have agreed to extend the current National Assembly session for another week.
Separately, PM Nawaz Sharif met President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad Thursday and briefed the President on Indian troops unabated breach of cease-fire across the LoC and other issues of national importance.
According to the informed sources, the Prime Minister also briefed the President about the crucial meeting of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet which thoroughly reviewed the situation across the LoC. Both the leaders also discussed overall situation in the country and important national issues. The Prime Minister also briefed the President about his upcoming visit to the USA in order to participate in the UN General Assembly session scheduled for next month.
