Disease kills dozens of Thar peacocks


KARACHI - Over three dozens peacocks have died due to imbalanced diet that seems to have affected their nervous system during last two weeks in Thar area of the province.
As per information gathered, the peacocks are suffering from an illness which doctors are describing as a metabolic disorder harming the brain.
Locals said six more peakcocks died in other areas including Goth Nathro, Bhattan Dhera during the last 24 hours.
The number of deaths have been disputed by the Sindh Wildlife Department that puts the toll at six. It said three are suffering from an illness which doctors are describing as a metabolic disorder harming the brain.
The deaths have been reported from the villages of Bapuhar, Gullan Jattar and Hoti Jattar. A resident of the area said the disease in the peacocks could not be ascertained as experts of the wildlife department were yet to reach the area to carry out the survey of disease.
It may be noted that there are over 2,000 villages in Thar and this bird is seen in at least half of them.
