Karachi- At least four people, including a former police officer were killed in a suicide bomb attack in Karachi today, police and hospital sources said.
Former Station House Officer Shafiq Tanoli came under attack when he was sitting with friends at a shop at old “Sabzi Mandi” area, witnesses said. A police officer said the blast also injured 15 other people in the attack. Relatives said that uncle and cousin of Tanoli were also killed in the attack. The shop was also destroyed in the blast.
Police said Tanoli, who had conducted some operations against the militants and criminal gangs in the city, was the target. He survived seven previous attacks. The injured, which also include Tanoli’s family members, were taken to a nearby hospital.No group has claimed responsibility.
Brother of slain police officer said he will register case against police officers as they had failed to provide security to Tanoli despite their repeated requests. He said his brother had been receiving threats but the police did not take any notice. The Inspector General Sindh Iqbal Mehmood ordered inquiry into the attack. DSP Nasir Lodhi claimed that slain Tanoli had been under threat from banned groups. He told reporters the police had advised him to avoid visiting the area but he had ignored the advice.
