EDO stresses use of iodized salt

MUZAFFARGARH – The District Health Department in collaboration with Micronutrient Initiative-Pakistan organised two days workshop for the raise awareness on the use of iodized salt here the other day.
Addressing the participants, EDO-Health Dr Ashiq Hussain Malik said that iodine deficiency was the single most common cause of impaired mental development resulting in low IQ.
Daily use of iodized salt could prevent iodine deficiency disorder and its consequences including physical and mental retardation, still births, abortions and goiter. Micronutrient Initiative is supporting the Health Department regarding provision of KIO3 & other equipment to salt processors on regular basis, he said
On the occasion, PMA President Dr Mahar Muhammad Iqbal said according to National Nutrition Survey 2011 severe iodine deficiency in mothers had reduced from 36.7 to 3.9 and among children 23.4 to 2.1.
He said that media as well as nutrition supervisor are playing important role to highlight the importance Iodized salt.
