GUJRANWALA The decision to put off its public meeting in Gujranwala which the PML-N leadership hoped would showcase the partys strength and achievements has thrown a spanner in the works, prompting speculations that why it has been deferred. The postponement just 72 hours before its scheduled time has visibly left the show of power myth and all preparations in doldrums. The citizens do not believe in the official opinion that the meeting has been put off over security concerns. Maybe it is because of the failure of the partys Motorcycle March that failed to attract the masses. Obviously, the PML-N has lost points to other parties, particularly Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, in the political arena, but more is the negative impact of the postponement of the meeting on the stakes for the party. Insiders say that lack of cooperation among MNAs, MPAs and office-bearers of the PML-Ns city and district chapters did cause the real damage at a time when preparations for the public gathering were in full swing; GT Road and the city were strewn with hoardings and flags of the PML-N. Lack of coordination did a lot of damage to the campaign for the meeting, they said while adding, Khurram Dastgir and Usman Ibrahim, both the PML-N MNAs had been on 180 degree on all issues, while MNA Mahmood Bashir Virk has already been made non-functional after being removed from the districts presidential slot. The partys city president and general secretary failed to sit together, while most of the partys office-bearers remained busy in their personal promotion instead of going among the masses for beating the record of the partys public meeting in Faisalabad. Reportedly, Sheikh brothers, while expressing their anger, did not join any political activity as they were ignored by the party leadership during the allotment of portfolios. According to media reports, the PML-N leadership had, in its Motorcycle March, forced the Education Department to take attendance of 9th and 10th class students in the Jinnah Stadium just to show that the youths were with the PML-N, not the PTI. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see how the PML-N tackles the situation in the days to come.
