Demarcation of Pak-India water boundary urged

OUR STAFF REPORTER KARACHI - Former judge of Supreme Court, Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid has demanded demarcation of water boundary between Pakistan and India to avoid arrests of fishermen and detention of their boats. Addressing a press conference here on Friday at Karachi Press Club regarding his recent visit to India on the issues of fishermen between both countries, Zahid said, Pakistan and India should first demarcate the water boundary especially in Kutch (Sir Creek) areas, as Kutch is the area where most of the fishermen were arrested by the maritime security of both the countries. He said that on the invitation of Indian civil society and Indian fisher folk association, Pakistan civil society delegation comprising Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid, former law minister and Senator Iqbal Haider and Karamat Ali of PILER representing the Pakistan Fisher Folk Association (PFF) visited the coastal areas of Gujarat, Pune and Mumbai from Sept 15 to 22. Zahid read out the recommendations of they had made . He said that they demanded release of all the detained fishermen in the jails of two countries and informed that 200 Indian fishermen were in Pakistani jails while 200 Pakistani fishermen were also in Indian jails. Both countries should release all detained boats and provide compensation to those who were arrested, he said. He said the delegation also demand mechanism to ensure that instead of arresting fishermen, the maritime authorities should warn them and push boats back to their countries.
