Soldier, 10 militants die in border clash

PESHAWAR - Amidst conflicting reports about casualties, cross-firing between suspected militants and the US-led allied troops continued right on the Pak-Afghan border at Nawa Pass area of Bajaur Agency on Wednesday. Officials confirmed the killing of a security man and injuries to another. According to independent sources, several civilians were killed in the clash whereas the Afghan authorities claimed that eight to 10 miscreants were killed in the fighting. Some unknown miscreants from Bajaur side attacked the Daud Fort, situated across the border at Nawa Pass. The attack caused several casualties. Many vehicles parked at the Afghan security forces camp were also damaged in the skirmishes. In retaliation, the Afghan security forces chased with the alleged militants across the border in Bajaur Agency territory. One Lance Naik of the Frontier Corps, Noor Zali Khan, was killed and another injured in Afghan forces attack. However, independent sources informed that eight to 10 militants were killed and injured. A civilian also lost life in the clash and his body was shifted to Khar Headquarters of Bajaur Agency. The Afghan authorities in Kabul have confirmed clashes right on the Pak-Afghan border in Kunar Province of Afghanistan. AFP adds: "There was a militant attack on a checkpost on the Afghan side and firing started. As a result, one Frontier Corps soldier was martyred and one was injured," army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP. A military statement said militants attacked a security checkpost at Daud Qilla in Afghanistan's territory early on Wednesday, sparking an exchange of fire. "Reportedly, eight to 10 miscreants were killed and the remaining disengaged," it said. A Pakistani security post also came under fire and Pakistani troops retaliated, the statement added. "Due to misunderstanding some exchange of fire took place between Afghan National Army troops and (Pakistani paramilitary) Frontier Corps troops on the border," it said. A Pakistani sergeant died and another had bullet injuries, it said. US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan and local Afghan forces were now in contact with Pakistani forces to try to find out how the incident happened, Abbas said. Monitoring Desk adds: Militants commander Baitullah Mehsud Wednesday strictly directed the Taliban to stop militant activities, a private TV channel reported. A written statement of Baitullah Mehsud was issued by Tehrik-i-Taliban Waziristan, directing the Taliban to halt their activities in Waziristan, Tank, Gomal and Dera Ismail Khan. "Those failing to abide by the directive will be hanged upside down in bazaars," the statement warned. While talking to BBC, TTP spokesman Maulvi Umar said the use of force in tribal areas would earn nothing for the US and its allies, and they should also adopt the policy of negotiations as the new government of Pakistan did. He confirmed a news item that a peace pact between Taliban and the government has been prepared. He said the Taliban would abide by the deal expected to be signed with the government in near future.
