Punjab police pull up socks

LAHORE After receiving strong threat alerts based on intelligence reports indicating possible terror attacks during the upcoming religious gatherings, the Punjab police have almost finalised an unusual but comprehensive security plan to maintain peace during Jumatul Wida and Eid congregations. Over 1,600 Masjids and Imambargahs in 10 Punjab districts have been declared sensitive, where unprecedented security arrangements would be made to maintain peace. Hundreds of police commandoes would also guard sensitive Masjids and Imambargahs during Jumatul Wida and Eid congregations. Well-placed sources revealed that the top officers at the provincial police headquarters are deeply reviewing security plan to be put in place from Friday morning across the province while many proposals are under consideration to thwart any possible terror attempt during the major religious congregations of the Islamic year. The proposals, sources revealed, included complete ban on the movement of all types of vehicles on the roads close to the congregations, deployment of plainclothesmen in great number in and around the religious places, maximum human intelligence gathering from the entire locality where the congregations are to be held, and installation of cell-phone jammers in the sensitive areas during the prayer timings. Sources say that the intelligence agencies are frequently sending strong threat alerts to the police headquarters, Special Branch and Counter-Terrorism Department urging the authorities to remain on their toes. Of course, the threat alerts are very strong though the exact targets and areas are not mentioned in the intelligence reports. But, we have to take such threats very seriously, a police officer at the Provincial Police Headquarters disclosed to this reporter on Wednesday, requesting his identity not be revealed. He further informed that the coordination with the intelligence agencies had been increased reasonably. All the security agencies are sharing important information and are in touch with each other, he added. Close Circuit Cameras (CCTVs) have also been installed in great number and on different positions around all the religious places in the sensitive areas. According to sources, at least 270 mosques and Imambargahs, out of total 1,600, have been declared as sensitive only in the provincial capital while police would provide security cover to no less than 3,400 Masjids and Imambargahs in the City on these occasions. The sources said that the authorities had divided Masajids and Imambargahs into three categories, i.e., A, B and C in order to ensure a foolproof security. In the A-category, there are 264 mosques and Imambargahs, where police commandoes will be deployed to avoid any untoward incident. The armed patrols will also be available in the areas where the A-category places of worship are situated. The use of loudspeakers would not be allowed, except for [Arabic] Khutba, Azan and prayers. The police officers have been ordered to launch a strict legal action in case any one found involved in distributing banned and provocative literature around the Masajids and Imambargah. Police sources further said that the management of the worship places had been directed to provide details of their volunteer security guards so that no flaws could be left in tight security arrangements. According to the officials, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Javed Iqbal is holding consecutive meetings to review the security arrangements in the province and ordered the police to set up a central monitoring cell to ensure close liaison with all the security agencies. The police have been directed that nobody should be allowed to carry or display weapons while special attention should be given to the security of Imambargahs, shrines and important religious personalities while audio and video coverage of important congregations also be ensured. Extensive police patrols and vehicles checking will also be carried out on this occasion, an official said, adding, special security personnel would be deployed at entry and exit points of the big cities. In collaboration with organisers, the physical search of persons participating in the congregations would also be ensured on this occasion.
