QUETTA - At least five people including four women died of gastroenteritis while dozens of others are suffering from the epidemic in remote areas of Khuzdar district, some 360 kilometres southeast of Quetta.
According to sources, the gastroenteritis broke out in different far-flung areas of the district claimed five lives. “Five people including Sher Bano, Bibi Ayesha, Shahnaz, Taj Bibi and Abdul Rehman who were suffering from the disease in Kolachi area died after not getting timely medical treatment,” sources said, adding that dozens of other people including women and children in other small villages are suffering from gastro and desperately need attention of the authorities concerned.
They said that lack of basic health facilities in the areas are aggravating the situation and the patients could not reach district headquarter hospital for being in the far-flung areas.
Talking to The Nation, District Health Officer Khuzdar Muhammad Amin confirmed the death toll took place in areas of Khuzdar. He said that a team comprising of five doctors had dispatched Kolachi to provide treatment to the gastro patients. However, according to the residents of the affected areas, no health team had reached them so far.
Sources said that various villages of Khuzdar have been affected due to the recent rains, which caused the gastroenteritis outbreak in the district and the people are compelled to use rainwater owing to the lack of clean drinking water.
Meanwhile, unidentified miscreants blew up a gas pipeline in Dera Bugti district while in another incident a Nato container was torched in Mastung district of Balochistan.
An 18-inch diameter gas pipeline was exploded in Pirkoh area. Sources said Uuidentified miscreants had fitted explosives to the pipeline that went off with a huge bang damaging a long portion of the pipeline. As a result, gas supply to the purification plant from well number 41 was suspended. However, no loss of life was reported in the explosion.
Local administration rushed and cordoned off the area. A search operation is underway to track down the accused people.
Meanwhile, a Nato container was torched in Mastung district. Levies sources said the container was passing from Dasht area when it came under attack by unidentified gunmen. The container caught fire and was badly damaged. However, the crew remained unhurt in the attack. The assailants fled the scene after committing the crime.
Levies personnel rushed and started investigation into the attack.
Meanwhile, a man identified as Wali Khan was shot dead by unidentified armed men in Killi Wayalaspra area of Zhob district. The killers fled after committing the crime. The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained till the filing of this report.
In another attack in Pirkoh area, unidentified gunmen killed a man and escaped from the crime site. The body was shifted to a nearby government hospital by local administration.
Separately, three passers-by were wounded in a shooting in Gulistan town near Musa checkpost by Frontier Corps in Quetta late on Saturday night. FC personnel tried to flag down a suspicious vehicle, but the driver did not halt and accelerated the vehicle instead. Upon this, FC personnel opened fire due to which three Hazara women heading somewhere in a rickshaw sustained injuries. The injured were ferried to Combined Military Hospital for treatment. FC personnel arrested the driver of the car who was drunk. A bottle of liquor was also seized from him.
