Nadra briefs CEC and COAS about electoral rolls


ISLAMABAD - IMRAN MUKHTAR - Chairman NADRA, Tariq Malik, Wednesday in his briefing to Chief Election Commissioner and Chief of Army Staff informed that 83,797 modifications so far had been made in the Final Electoral Rolls-2012 and 1.5 million fresh CNICs had been provided to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for votes’ registration.
Chief Election Commissioner Justice Fakharuddin G Ibrahim and other members of ECP attended the detailed briefing at NADRA Headquarters on Electoral Rolls Project being jointly carried out by ECP and National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA). A statement issued by NADRA says that at the end of meeting, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, accompanied by Secretary Defense Lt General (Retd) Asif Yasin Malik, also joined to discuss the verification of electoral rolls pertaining to Karachi in light of Supreme Court of Pakistan order.
The participants were briefed about progress of amendments and corrections being made in Final Electoral Rolls - 2012 after its publication, in accordance to Electoral Law. Chairman NADRA informed that this process was being carried out with the help of district election commissioners of ECP and till today 83,797 modifications had been made under Section 18 of Electoral Rolls Act, 1974. Such modifications include 22,548 from Balochistan, 21,091 from Sindh, 20,060 from Punjab, 16,980 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2,610 from Islamabad Capital territory (ICT) and 508 from Fata. This process will continue till announcement of general elections.
The meeting was told that Final Electoral Rolls-2012, published on 31st July 2012 would be used in upcoming general elections. This electoral roll contains 85 million voters in four provinces of Pakistan and ICT as well as FATA.
Chairman NADRA also briefed the meeting about issuance of fresh computerized national identity cards (CNICs) to citizens attaining the age of 18 years. Lists of such CNICs are being shared with ECP for their due verification and subsequent registration as voters.
 There are 1.5 million CNICs whose lists are being provided to ECP in this regard, NADRA chief said during the briefing.
Chairman NADRA also informed he delegation that till now 12 million voters had checked their vote through ‘8300’ SMS service, which was unprecedented in the history of Pakistan.
