RAWALPINDI - The 3rd Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Conference 2013 was organised by Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) on Thursday at Morgah Club.
Imminent speakers and participants from widely diverse fields attended this event, informed the ARL spokesman.
ARL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Muhammad Adil Khattak, in his opening address, highlighted the significance of HSE in today's business environment and the importance of sharing best business practices and learning from experiences of each other for a safer future. He said that organising such knowledge-sharing events is in line with ARL's core value of learning and innovation.
Khattak said that improving trust and communication with stakeholders, applying technology to improve health, safety and environmental (HSE) performance and dealing with global climate change are the most important sustainable development issues. In most of the cases, causes of serious accidents were repeats of similar failures in the past. The challenges faced by all of us were of similar nature and its solution by one of the corporate entity may help others. "We must make the most of this truly unique opportunity by committing to open and honest dialogue, real and lasting cross-sector networking and a willingness to share and learn," he said. Khattak said, "We at ARL take HSE as a corner stone of our business as well as moral and social responsibility. We believe that in today's highly competitive and performance driven business climate nobody can afford to rest on its laurels.
Sustainable business growth is possible only when we take care of the interests of our stakeholders and the society at large. Our implementation, certifications and continuous compliance with ISO-9001, ISO-14001, OHSAS-18001, ISO-17025 and ISO-50001 not only keep us on the right track but also enable continuous improvement."
He also highlighted the promotion of safety culture in ARL that has resulted in a significant reduction of our Total Accident Incident Frequency Rate (TAIFR) from 15 per cent to 2.3 per cent in the last six years.
"ARL is also proud recipient of many national and international awards in HSE including, the prestigious Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Award for two consecutive years, UN Global Compact Award, WWF and ACCA's Best Sustainability Report Awards for three consecutive years, ICAP and ICMA Annual Report awards, Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) -Green Industry Award 2011 etc," he said.
During the one day conference, 12 papers were read by representatives of reputed organisations with topics ranging from, WWF Green Office, Behaviour Based Safety, Energy and Recourse Conservation, Overview of Building Energy Code of Pakistan, Ergonomics, Nurturing Our Future through Environmental Stewardship, Effective Safety Supervision in Turnaround, ISO-50001 Implementation at Attock Refinery Limited, Implementation of Safety Management System at KAPCO, Human Factors in Risk Assessment, Improving LTIFR through Contractor Safety Management Practices, Operating Experiences of aMDEA in CO2 Removal System and Cleaner Production Practices and Environment Theme 2013.
At the end, management of ARL thanked all participants for attending the Conference and making it a resounding success.
