2 new prisons on the cards

GUJRANWALA - Punjab Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Shaukat Feroze Khan has said that two new prisons, each having a capacity of 1,000 prisoners, are being established in Mianwali and Sahiwal while work on 13 others have been underway in the province. A plan has been under consideration to establish separate prisons for women and children. He stated this while talking to newsmen after his annual visit to the Central Jail Gujranwala. He inspected almost every part of the jail. On the occasion, the band and parading contingent started dancing in the jail soon after the announcement of Rs15,000 by the visiting the DIG. DIG Shaukat Feroze said that the provincial government had been making sincere efforts to provide maximum facilitates to prisoners. The health, education and training facilities have been improved at prisons to ensure welfare of the inmates, he claimed. He expressed satisfaction regarding administration and arrangements in the jail and was briefed by Superintendent Jail Malik Zia Uddin about the construction of 8 new barracks in the jail. The DIG said that overcrowding in jails could only be tackled by establishing jails at district levels. He hoped that situations would improve considerably for women and juvenile after separate jails for them.
