KARACHI - For further strengthening its anti-theft campaign in Korangi Sector 10, the KESC has joined hands with the local community and initiated to create a Women Empowerment Community Group. Korangi-10, a new sector in Korangi and going through development phase- with around fifty percent of the area still under construction, has nearly 2,200 houses and a population of around 12,000 people. According the KESC spokesman, in order to purge this new area with clandestine power connections, the KESC aims to create a theft free community with the help of this group of ten females who belong to the local community. The rationale behind creating this group is two faced: Firstly, women are usually at the forefront in terms of electricity related problems and the monthly bill payment is part of the household budget. Secondly, he said, if the women are empowered through a monthly stipend, it will create part time employment opportunities which will result in a win-win situation for KESC and the community as these women have a greater understanding of the psyche of their own people and will demonstrate a more holistic approach while dealing with them about the negative consequences of illegal connections, he added.
