President Mamnoon Hussain on Sunday urged media to play its role in guiding people and guarding national interests.
Addressing South Asia Free Media Association's sixth National Conference in Bhurban‚ the President said the government firmly believes in freedom of expression and free press because no society can make progress without freedom of expression and access to information.
Mamnoon Hussain said the Pakistani media is playing a vital role in development of the country.
He said a responsible government cannot ensure transparency and accountability without independent‚ functioning and responsible media.
He said media not only safeguards the democracy‚ but also the public interest.
He said media also need to ensure that its powers are not misused.
The President said Pakistan has given prevalent sacrifices in fight against terrorism and extremism.
He said despite countless sacrifices on economic and public fronts‚ Pakistani nation has shown strength of mind.
He said the present democratic government is also determined to bring a logical by the war against terrorism according to people's aspirations.
He said Pakistan wants to establish a sustainable peace in the region‚ so that governments can pay heed to development and prosperity of people.
Mamnoon Hussain urged media to promote efforts for the establishment of peace in the region and block the path of terrorism and extremism on permanent basis.
